The San Gabriel Valley area high school football rankings as of Sept. 1 for teams covered by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Pasadena Star-News and Whittier Daily News.
1. DAMIEN (2-0)
The Spartans notched one of their biggest wins in years, going on the road and knocking off JSerra, 34-31, on quarterback Isaiah Arriaza’s go-ahead rushing touchdown in the final minute. Arriaza had a big night passing too, throwing for 444 yards and two touchdowns. The Spartans have left little doubt they deserve the SGV’s top spot in the rankings heading into their home opener against St. Paul.

3. MUIR (1-0)
The Mustangs had a bye week to get ready for Charter Oak in one of the most anticipated nonleague games of the season. The Mustangs looked good defensively while holding off Bonita, 17-14, in the season opener during Week 0. They will need more offensive firepower if they hope to keep pace with the Chargers, who have had an impressive first two weeks.

5. BISHOP AMAT (1-1)
The Lancers hung for a half before Oak Hills pulled away in the second half to post a 38-10 victory. They couldn’t get their running game going or get enough stops. They better figure things out quick because they hit the road against Valencia, which is coming off an impressive 34-20 win over Chaminade.

6. BONITA (1-1)
The Bearcats were without injured senior QB Travis Lippert and two-way standout Joseph Lara and still posted a 37-0 victory over Diamond Ranch a week after a close loss, 17-14, to Muir. Bearcats freshman quarterback Cade Burbidge played well, tossing two touchdown passes. They will have a much stiffer test this week against Aquinas, which barely lost to Damien (20-15) and crushed Glendora (34-7) last week

Next: vs. Warren (0-2), Thursday, 7 p.m.
9. NORTHVIEW (1-1)
The Vikings turned the ball over four times in a 56-21 loss to La Habra. That wasn’t the reason they lost. La Habra’s offense was moving at will. The Vikings hope they learned something by taking on an upper-division opponent. There were some positives. The Vikings showed an ability to move the ball and they’re constantly a big-play threat.
