Flag Football pairings: Bishop Amat, Bonita and San Dimas all land in Division 2

SGV flag football teams learn their divisions and opponents for the playoffs, which begin next week

The CIF Southern Section flag football playoff pairings were posted on Friday, and it was not kind to the top three-ranked teams in the San Gabriel Valley, all of whom will be in the tough Division 2 playoffs.

All first round games in Division’s 2 through 6 are on Tuesday.

Bishop Amat, who looked like it might be one of the top seeds in Division 3 over the past few weeks according to the CIF-SS computer rankings, was the last team to qualify in Division 2.

That means Bishop Amat (20-5), with seven straight shutouts and winners of the Santa Fe League, will be on the road in the first round against top-seed Cypress (19-6), who finished second in the Sunset League.

San Dimas (23-5), who won the Hacienda League title and finished on top of the SGV rankings, will be on the road in the first round against Downey (21-4), who finished second in the Gateway League.

The Saints have a great one-two punch. Quarterback Leiani Jaime has thrown for 1,840 yards to go with 40 touchdowns passes. She has rushed for nearly 2,000 yards and 20 touchdowns. Two-way standout Faith Kearns has 111 receptions for 1,566 yards and 40 touchdown catches.

Bonita (17-4), who won the Palomares League and has played well over the last month, also will have to be on the road in the first round against Seaview League champion Beckman (18-6). Bonita hopes to lean on senior quarterback Tressa Beatty, who led them to the D2 playoffs last season as well.

DIVISION 3

La Habra (16-7) is the No. 2 seed and will host Rio Hondo League champion San Marino (14-3) in the first round. San Marino boasts senior quarterback Lilly Mata, who has thrown for an area best 3,942 yards and 67 touchdowns.

California (16-3) won the Del Rio League title and earned a first-round home game against Sunny Hills (14-8). La Serna (13-11-1), who finished second to Cal in the Del Rio League, will be on the road against top-seed Mira Costa (9-7).

South Hills (16-8), who has a dynamite quarterback in Haley Ramos, will be home against Moorpark (6-5).

Glendora (10-8) got in as an at-large and will be on the road against fourth-seed Torrance (13-4). Sonora (11-10) is at Roosevelt (10-10).
