WHITTIER — La Serna junior wide receiver Landon Armenta caught four touchdown passes and junior quarterback Grady Long threw for 176 yards and four TDs to lead the La Serna Lancers to a 42-27 win over visiting Cal High Friday night in a Del Rio League game.
Armenta caught touchdown passes of 23, 32, 55, 29 yards for a game-high 139 yards.
“Only four catches, but we made the most out of every opportunity we had,” said Armenta, who scored his 13th TD of the season. He now has 821 yards receiving for the Lancers this season.
“We (Long and Armenta) have a great connection.”
The Lancers scored on all four of their possessions in the first half and had a 28-6 lead at the intermission.
“We came out hot (Friday) and the boys were fired up for this one and it showed from the start,” said La Serna coach Andy George, who won his 101st game in his 11 years at the helm. “We wanted to finish this game out right.”
Senior running back Ayden Contreras led the Lancers with 84 rushing yards on seven carries, including a 47-yard touchdown.
Junior running back Elias Huerta als had a 29-yard score for La Serna (6-3, 3-0).
Cal (3-5, 0-2) was led by senior running back Andrew Robledo with a game-high 119 yards on 17 carries.
Scoring for the Condors was
Senior running backs Brian Padilla (62 yards, eight carries) and Alex Meza scored for the Condors with 5- and 1-yard scores, respectively.
The third touchdown from the Condors came on a 77-yard fumble return by junior defensive back Rafael Toledo.
Sophomore kicker Brandon Corvera added field goals of 36 and 23 yards.
The first two touchdowns to Armenta came in the first quarter for 23 and 32 yards, respectively, for the 14-0 lead.
The Lancers added a third score on the 47-yard run from Contreras late in the opening quarter.
The fourth Lancers touchdown in the game, the 29-yard run by Huerta, gave them a 28-0 lead. Cal scored both of its field goals late in the half by Corvera, to trail 28-6.
Armenta opened the second half with his third score of the game on one of his longest TD receptions of the season (55 yards) to lead, 35-6.
Meza scored the first of his two TDs late in the third quarter to trail 35-13. Less than a minute later, Armenta completed his perfect night with a 29-yard touchdown reception.
“Four touchdowns, the guy is a dog,” said Long of his go-to wide receiver. “I know if I throw the ball to him, he’s going to make a play.
“We (team) have good chemistry right now and just have to keep it rolling in the playoffs.”
Meza and Toledo completed the scoring for the Condors with the only scores in the fourth quarter.
